Champions Accra Polytechnic maintained their dominance in tertiary basketball in Ghana after beating the Kwame Nkrumah University Science and Technology [KNUST] to win the 2015 UPAC Basketball Championships held at the University of Ghana campus.
The defending Champions put up a gallant performance and outclassed their counterparts from Kumasi to win their third consecutive UPAC Basketball Championships.
The Champions managed to pull their neck out of what was dubbed the “Group of Death” after recording wins over Zenith University College, KNUST and Takoradi Polytechnic.
A massive victory over debutant Marshalls University College at the Semi-Finals saw the giants setting up a clash with the ever impressive KNUST at the finals.
Revenge was the key element for KNUST having lost heavily to their counterparts at the Group stages. For Accra Polytechnic, it was yet another opportunity to show their superiority over their foes.
Coach Brimah Lawal’s side who were missing four of their key players had to rally from behind in three quarters to win the game 57-40.
A jerky start from Accra Polytechnic saw them go down in the first three quarters trilling by 12 points.
The team from Tudu [Accra] having received pep talks from their technical bench managed to put up a spirited performance in the final quarter to finish off the game in grand style.
Excellent three pointers from Power forwards Farat and Varanda coupled with some sweet fast breaks from tall lanky Romeo saw Accra Poly surpassing their colleagues after the final quarter to win the game with a points difference of 17.
Farat, who was the main hero for Accra Polytechnic on the day, however expressed his excitement after the game.
“It was a difficult and a sweet victory for us and I will say I am very happy for this win” he told the media after the game.
“We fought very hard when we were down and that really shows the team spirit in us. I am very happy and will like to thank my teammates for this win.”
Coach Lawal, who becomes the only coach to have led a team to three successive UPAC Championships titles, also added his take on the game.
“I will say we really met a good side and they showed they deserved to be in the finals.”
“They gave us a run for our money and I must admit they were a strong side.”
“Congratulations to my boys for such an excellent performance. I will say kudos to them.”
The GAPSA Champions thus defends the trophy they won in 2011 and 2013.
